Zimbabwe has a huge and highly diversified mineral resource base dominated by two prominent geological features namely the famous Great Dyke and the ancient Greenstone Belts, also known as Gold Belts. The Great Dyke is a layered igneous complex extending north-south for about 550 km. The Great Dyke plays host to the world’s largest high grade chromite resource base.

Chromium (Cr) is a hard, bluish metallic element. The only ore of chromium is the mineral chromite and 99 percent of the world’s chromite is found in southern Africa and Zimbabwe. Geologists estimate that there are about 11 billion tons of mineable chromite ore in the world, enough to supply the current demand for hundreds of years.
Since most chromite deposits are relatively close to the surface, open-cast mining is the most widely used method of mining in Zimbabwe. Open-pit mining, or open-cast mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit.
Zimbabwe also has approximately 15% of the global chromite reserves and these are also mainly found within the Great Dyke. Chromite is mined throughout the Dyke as the chromite seam deposits span the entire dyke. Some of the chromite mining operations occur especially in the Darwendale, Lalapanzi and Mutorashanga areas.
Nearly all of Zimbabwe’s chrome production is sourced from the Great Dyke and consumed for local ferrochrome plants. Madagascar also has a small chromite mining industry. Chromite is generally produced as a by-product of PGM mining and is normally stockpiled before selling to the ferrochrome industry. Mining Companies active
